An introduction to these reviews: my novel was published in India without any of the Western fanfare, buzz, and big advances that accompanied a few other novels at that time. It was also: very, very different from anything ever written by an Indian, playing with the rules of language and challenging every known sacred cow: among other things, the book had a fantasy editor character who kept intervening and trying to influence the narrator, using her powerful argumentative skill as well as her sexual charms. The novel used Konkani words without translation, but providing a "subversive" glossary. For all these reasons, but above all the lack of the Western validation, some reviewers may have felt hesitant about giving the novel their unqualified support.
