Are you and I just imaginary actors in a dream, whether the dreamer be Brahma or Alice of Lewis Carrol’s creation? Is there any truth to what’s been going on, or are we just playthings in some child’s “Now make up your own plot” exercise?
“Beyond extraordinary,” exclaimed Pepe Escobar of Donald Trump’s achievement in cooling the white hot heat and hatred between the world’s two nuclear superpowers. “No one could imagine, just a few months back, that this would happen.”
And just a few days back, the world stepped back from the brink of nuclear power between two modest nuclear powers (each owning around 170 nukes), thanks to a phone call by Donald Trump to the two countries’ leaders. An all-out nuclear war between the two of them could have most killed a billion people, but that was still a huge number of human beings, many of them personally related to me or dear friends.
In almost every other policy of his, Donald Trump has dithered and disappointed me. The continuing starvation and genocide of Gazans horrifies me. And do I see one voice of compassion from the leaders of the EU? Brown Lives Don’t Matter.
So let’s be thankful for what we’ve got: a billion Indians and Pakistanis unharmed by the events of the last few weeks.
My cabinet of intellectuals (see previous posts) has frequently pointed out to me how, with Joe President as nominal president of the U.S., we had many near-miss escalations to the brink of global extinction. At least now, with Trump mostly showing respect for President Putin, and being open, at times, to peace, we are alive. Though much foolishness continues.
