OUR PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS
The Invisible Man Press (publisher of Invisible Man Books, publishers for the Invisible Man, the Invisible Woman, and the Invisible Viewpoint) derived inspiration for its name from Ralph Ellison’s classic novel, "The Invisible Man", a story of how society refuses to recognize the existence and humanity of some of its members. When the viewpoint of writers or their existence is not recognized, it is the ultimate form of censorship, short of death. In this sense, the establishment of the Press is above all an act of freedom of expression--the principle that inspired Tom Paine, D.H. Lawrence, Walt Whitman, and countless others who dared to challenge the prejudices of their time. It is thus a political idea and a political statement intended to draw attention to the discreet apartheid of the Western publishing world, which encourages and promotes "suitable boys" among writers of non-Western origin, discouraging them from expressing their innermost feelings, their hurt, their rage, their sexuality, their non-stereotypical individuality. In this sense the Press was a success even before it had published a single book; and we have already published four, limited in their quantities but unlimited in their cheekiness.
PUBLISHING PROGRAM
Our limited budget (currently down to single digits) has made us concentrate on just a few titles until now, and until Bill Gates, George Soros, Asif Premji, or half a million book buyers bail us out:
1) We will highlight (only on the web sites, and only after we have a volunteer web design assistant) the works of writers and publishers who are invisible or whose worldview we support, provided we have some visible writers to help us with the web design and update pro bono.
2) We will sell (after we acquire staff and better distribution) selected titles, by mail, of the books and authors we support .
3) All of this will change if we were to receive a significant investment from a socially committed philanthropist, or substantial income from the sale of subsidiary rights to any of our existing titles: we will then appoint a fulltime editor/manager and pursue an aggressive publishing program.
To reach us to help distribute our titles, e-mail invisible_man_books@yahoo.com
Sorry, but for administrative reasons NO MANUSCRIPTS can be accepted at present, but we will announce a change of policy as soon as the required funds manifest themselves.
Note: www.invisiblemanpress.com, the web site of Invisible Man Press, has been merged into www.richardcrasta.com for reasons of economy and to avoid duplication, and the titles of Invisible Man Press are being sold through www.richardcrasta.com |
